Mario Kart 3DS Analysis

The recent batch of screenshots, gameplay footage and a trailer of Mario Kart 3DS, sheds a much needed light on the game that was unveiled over a year ago at last year’s E3. After analyzing the material released, I have separated what we know into three different groups; characters, items and tracks.

From what we have seen, we have seen a total of 8 playable characters, not including Miis, so far. Oddly, Wario has not been seen in any form yet and was even replaced by Koopa in the demo. The current list of playable characters:

  • Mario
  • Luigi
  • Peach
  • Yoshi
  • DK
  • Koopa
  • Toad
  • Bowser
  • Mii

All your classic Mario Kart items return including:

  • Green Shell
  • Triple Green Shell
  • Red Shell
  • Triple Red Shell
  • Banana
  • Triple Banana
  • Mushroom
  • Triple Mushroom
  • Blue Shell
  • Star
  • Blooper
  • Thunderbolt
  • Bullet Bill
  • Coins

What’s interesting is that coins can once again be collected, just as they were in the original Super Mario Kart. What their purpose of collecting is currently unknown.

As of the E3 demo, a total of nine different tracks were shown. Six were brand new tracks while the other three were returning tracks from Mario Kart DS and Wii.

Track #1

What appears to be the “castle” course of Mario Kart 3DS, the level has you riding through Peach’s castle and around the surrounding area. Cherry blossom trees surround a portion of the track and the bouncy mushrooms from Mushroom Gorge make a return.

Track #2

This track starts off with a giant ramp that takes your cart down to a forest. The forest leads into a cave that takes you to the back of a mountain that returns you to the giant ramp. Lots of coins in this level.

Track #3

Aside from a few screenshots, not much is known about this level. The level features windmills and hot air ballons can clearly be seen.

 Track #4

This track features an underwater portion that takes full advantage of the new propellers added to everyones kart.

Track #5

With DK’s recent outing in Donkey Kong Country Returns, Retro Studios came in and had a level made dedicated to the new game. The track features the generic Tiki enemies and DK’s hut can even be seen.

Track #6

Another track that takes place in a different Nintendo franchise, this track takes the gang into Wuhu Island. Miis are seen on the sidelines of the track, and the famous Red Iron Bridge is part of the track as well.

 Track #7 (Airship Fortress)

Returning from Mario Kart DS, Airship Fortress brgings you back to the crumbling castels filled with charging bullet bills. Expect coins to be scattered across the track, as well as ramps made for the new gliding mechanic.

Track #8 (Luigi’s Mansion)

Another returning Mario Kart DS track, Luigi’s Mansion takes you through and around the mansion that Luigi ventured through long ago. Coins will now be seen on the track as well as new ramps to better the gliding.

Track #9 (Maple Treeway)

A favorite among Mario Kart fans, Maple Treeway reutrns from Mario Kart Wii with that autumn feel that made the original so enjoyable. Again, expect coins and new ramps to be added.

  1. Great analysis. This analysis made it more promising to purchase this game. Strange that Wario has not appeared so far.
