Majora’s Mask 3DS – A Remake Done Right

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D was a fantastic game. It brought with it everything that made the original so special with updated visuals and new controls. However, was it worth the price tag? Were graphical updates and 3DS designed gimmicks enough to warrant a remake of a classic game at full price? The simple answer is no.

While the game is a masterpiece, rereleasing the game with minor updates as a full retail game is not the way to go. When news spread that a Majora’s Mask remake was not impossible, fans already had a good feel of what should be added when compared to the recently released Ocarina of Time 3D. With that in mind, take a look at some of the features fans are clamoring for in a Majora’s Mask remake.

Add a Cave of Ordeals

Since the Wind Waker, a mini-dungeon, known as the Savage Labyrinth in Wind Waker and Cave of Ordeals in Twilight Princess, have become ever more popular in recent titles. The idea is that Link must traverse through a series of rooms, usually about 50, and defeat all the enemies within each room, only using resources that you entered with as you cannot find anything within the mini-dungeon. If you can make it to the end without dying, a great prize is usually obtained at the end. This now staple feature should make a return in Majora’s Mask. Include all the enemies of the game and have different masks play a role in completing the quest.

Meaningful Masks

In Majora’s Mask, some masks were used for different gameplay purposes and other masks were simply related to side quests and had no effect upon wearing them. What if the Circus Leader’s Mask actually made other NPCs tear up when you talk to them, or have the Mask of Scents a little more to do like being able to sniff out different ingredients for potions throughout the world of Termina. Have some minigames made that revolve around certain masks and their abilities.

More Sidequests

It’s no secret that Majora’s Mask fans are all about the side quests. The original game had a handful of touching and memorable side quests, but what if you could add even more? What happened next for the misplaced Goron? What about the twins? They must have a story of their own? I’m sure Tingle has plenty to say.

Expand the Town

Clock Town is the heart of Majora’s Mask. The emotions and story telling that all take place here is what makes Majora’s Mask stand out. But what if we could expand on that? Grow the city! Add new sections, more shops, more homes, more characters and adding more sidequests will be a breeze.

More Masks and Items

We all love more, right? Adding in a few extra masks, along with the new sidequests, can really set this game apart from simple being a rehash. While the item selection is good, it can feel a bit out of place at times. Does the Powder Keg really need a spot of it’s own? Did you ever really need six bottles at once? Add an item from a previous game (Ball and Chain please) or create an all new item unique for the remake.

A Better Save System

The idea to have to reset time once you save isn’t a bad one. The problem comes when it is not ideal to stop the temple or side quest you are in the middle of and reset your game because you are no longer able to play. It’s not the biggest problem in the world, but a save system similar to Ocarina of Time could help.

The original Majora’s Mask that was released over ten years ago is still an incredible game. However, if you are going to be remaking a game, please put in the effort to recreate the experience and not just copy over the same game from one console to the next. Updated visuals and new controls are a given, Nintendo.

  1. If there were to be a 3DS version of Majora’s Mask, then I would no doubt purchase it, as I missed it on the original Nintendo 64. And yes, we all want more content, not just the same thing with updated graphics and whatnot.

  2. Ideas says:

MM has a lot of items, counting the masks it has more than even ALTTP, I’d rather just have the items it has have more uses than to add even more. And the save system shouldn’t be entirely overhauled, a quicker way to “owl save” would be an idea comprimose. Other than that, yeah, addition content that doesn’t interfere with the story in any way would only be a plus.

You have probably already seen this, but here is the petition to get MM on the 3DS. its got over 35000 signatures and their goal is 50000. It doesn’t take much to sign, help out please! :)
